Adding a member (someone who only prints)
Give a grandparent, a helper or a volunteer the simple printing screen, and get them signed in on their iPad.
A member sees one screen: a list of households, big buttons, and a print button. No settings and no menus. Admins see everything else. The member never needs to see the admin console.
1. Create the account
- Go to Admin → Users.
- Under Add an account, type their name (for example "Grandma") and a username (lowercase, no spaces).
- Under What can they do?, choose Member — just the simple printing screen.
- Type an email address that they, or you, can open on the device they'll print from.
- Press Create account.
There's no password to hand over. Members sign in with an email link or a passkey, like everyone else, which is why the email address is required. The confirmation has an Email them a sign-in link now button, or they can ask for a link themselves on the sign-in page (step 2). Later, Email a sign-in link on their card in Users sends a fresh one.
About the email address: each account needs its own. If you give the member your own address, the sign-in link opens your admin account instead. If they don't use email, set up an address just for this that you can open on their iPad. After step 3 below, they won't need it again.
The member's email is also where emailed label batches and birthday occasions are sent.
2. Sign them in on their iPad
Do this once, sitting next to them:
- On their iPad, open Safari and go to laberty.app/login.
- Type the member's email address and tap Email me a link.
- On the same iPad, open the email and tap Sign in. A page opens; tap Sign in again.
The iPad now opens straight to the printing screen, and stays signed in for up to a year.
Why the same iPad? You're signed in on whichever device taps that last button. If you open the email on your own phone, your phone gets signed in, not their iPad.
3. Put Laberty on the Home Screen — only once they're actually signed in
Check the iPad is genuinely showing their household list first, not just a "Sign in" page. Then, in Safari, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen. Laberty then opens like an app, straight to their list.
Do this step last, never first. Adding the icon before they're signed in — or before a sign-in has fully gone through — can leave that icon showing "signed out" even after they sign in a moment later somewhere else on the same iPad. If that happens: delete the Home Screen icon, confirm the household list is on screen in Safari itself, and only then add it to the Home Screen again. Don't re-add it "just in case" while troubleshooting something else — that's the one action most likely to cause this.
A member's account has no Settings of its own — there's no page for them to add their own passkey, so an emailed sign-in link is how they get back in if the iPad is ever signed out. It stays signed in for up to a year, so this should be rare.
What they can do
- Browse or search households by last name, and tap a label style to select it.
- Print the selected labels, after checking them on the next screen. See Printing from an iPhone or iPad. If you run the print bridge, Print goes straight to the printer and they never see the iPad's print menu. Nothing to switch on.
- Ask Laberty instead: hold the big microphone and speak, or type ("send a birthday card to the Hendersons"), and tap the answers. Replies can be read out loud as well as shown. The assistant can also remember birthdays so the labels come again next year. This uses AI actions. See Talking to Laberty.
- Write a note: print a short note on the continuous roll.
Nothing is printed, saved or changed until they tap a button. To see exactly what they see, use End User View in the admin menu.
