Printing from an iPhone or iPad
How the print button works on a phone or tablet, what the Share menu is for, and what to do when it misbehaves.
With a print bridge connected, pressing Print prints. The labels go straight to the printer, with no Share menu and nothing else to tap.
Without a bridge, Laberty makes your labels as a PDF at the exact size of the label stock. It then hands them to the device's own Share menu, and you print from there, the same way you'd print a photo. That works on every plan.
Before the first time
- The printer must show up when you tap Print on the iPhone or iPad. Usually that means the printer and the device are on the same Wi-Fi network. If your printer doesn't appear, follow the printer maker's instructions for printing from an iPhone or iPad with your model.
- Load the printer with the labels you're about to print.
Print address labels
- Find the household. Search by last name, or tap a letter down the right-hand side.
- Tap a label style under the household, such as a first name, Couple or Family. It turns green, and a tray appears at the bottom.
- Add more if you like. Then tap Print 1 label (or however many) in the tray.
- On Your labels, check the list, and check Label stock matches the labels in the printer. The Actual size preview shows how they'll look.
- Tap Print.
- On the Ready page, tap the big print button. The Share menu opens.
- Tap Print, choose the printer, and tap Print again.
When the Share menu closes, Laberty goes back to the list.
Straight to the printer, with the print bridge
When the print bridge is running, this happens on its own. Nobody has to switch it on. Steps 6 and 7 above go away. After Print:
- A big page says Sending your labels to the printer…
- A few seconds later it says Printed ✓, and the labels come out. Tap Back to the start.
If the printer doesn't take them, because it failed or the bridge didn't pick them up within about 45 seconds, the page says so in plain words. It shows one button, Print from this iPad instead, which opens the usual Ready page for the same labels. Nothing is lost, and admins get the usual email about what went wrong.
It goes to the bridge when all of these are true. Otherwise the Share menu opens as before:
- The plan includes the print bridge (Home or Business).
- The default printer is one the bridge can reach: a Brother QL, Zebra, receipt or IPP printer with its IP address filled in, or a driver printer with its print queue name.
- The bridge has checked in within the last few minutes. If it's down, Print opens the Share menu straight away.
- An admin hasn't ticked Always use the iPad or phone print dialog instead on Admin → Printers & stock.
Notes work the same way. So does Ask Laberty: when the bridge can print, its second button reads Or send these straight to the printer instead of offering to email the labels.
Print by asking
Tap Ask Laberty instead, then say or type what you want, such as "a birthday card for the Hendersons". The assistant finds the household and shows buttons to tap. Nothing prints until you tap one. This uses AI actions.
If printing is being difficult, the assistant can email the labels to you instead, as a PDF to print later. Your account needs an email address for that.
Print a note
Tap Write a note, say or type the words, check them, then tap Print this. The note prints on the continuous roll, only as long as it needs to be.
Add Laberty to the Home Screen
In Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. Laberty then opens like an app. Printing works the same from the Home Screen icon, because Laberty keeps you on its own pages right up to the Share menu.
When it doesn't work
| What happens | Try this |
|---|---|
| "Can't open the share menu automatically here" appears | Tap the link to open the PDF, then tap the Share icon and choose Print |
| The printer isn't in the Print list | Check the device and the printer are on the same Wi-Fi. Turn the printer off and on, and try again |
| Labels come out the wrong size | Label stock on the Your labels screen doesn't match the roll. Change it, and print again |
| The Print button in the tray is greyed out | Nothing is selected yet. Tap a label style first |
| "Nothing to print yet." | There are no households yet. An admin needs to add one |
| "The printer didn't take them" | Tap Print from this iPad instead. Then an admin should check the printer, and the email Laberty sent about it |
| The Share menu opens, though you have a print bridge | The bridge hasn't been seen for a few minutes, the default printer has no address, or the print dialog is forced on. Admin → Printers & stock says which |
