Label layouts and previews
See how each kind of label fits every label size you have loaded, and save a layout that suits a size.
Laberty fits every label to the labels that are actually loaded, at the moment you print. The same note prints differently on a 2.4in roll than on a 4 × 6in Zebra label, but the same note on the same labels always prints exactly the same way.
Printing never uses AI. The fitting is a fixed set of rules, so it's fast, free, and predictable.
How a label is fitted
Each kind of label is made of parts: a name, a date, a list, tags, a small footer. Each part has a size range and an importance. When space is short, Laberty works through these steps, stopping as soon as the label fits:
- Largest. Every part starts at its largest size.
- Shrink. Everything shrinks together, never below each part's smallest readable size.
- Shorten. Parts that matter least are shortened. For example, "Prepared by Sam" becomes "By Sam", and "Tuesday" becomes "Tue".
- Leave off. Parts that matter least are left off, starting from the bottom.
- Refuse. If the parts that must show still don't fit, Laberty doesn't print a label with something missing. It tells you why instead, for example 8 lines don't fit on 2.4in × 1in; use a longer label or split it.
On a continuous roll, the label simply grows longer, up to a maximum length, instead of leaving things off.
On fixed-size labels, Laberty may turn the layout sideways, but only when the normal direction can't fit the important parts. The printed page is still the size of your labels.
See the previews
- Go to Admin → Label layouts. Admins and caregivers can open it; members can't.
- Pick a label type at the top.
- Change the sample content on the left. Every preview updates as you type.
There's one preview for each label size in Printers & stock. For a sheet of labels, you see a single label from the sheet. Under each preview is a badge:
| Badge | What it means |
|---|---|
| Fits | Everything at its full size. |
| Shrunk to 9pt | Everything fits, with the smallest text at that size. |
| Abbreviated or Shortened | A less important part uses its short form. |
| Dropped: footer | That part was left off to make room. |
| Doesn't fit | Something that must show can't fit. The reason is shown underneath. |
Open PDF shows the exact file that would print for the sample.
Suggest a layout with AI
If a label size doesn't look right, press Suggest a layout for that size. The AI proposes a layout: which parts matter most, their sizes, and whether to turn the label.
- Laberty checks the suggestion, and tries it on the sample. If it has problems, the AI gets one chance to fix them.
- You see Now and With this template side by side. You can adjust the template before saving it.
- Nothing changes until you press Save.
Each suggestion uses AI actions, like other AI features. What AI actions are.
The AI is only used when you press that button. Once a layout is saved, printing uses it with no AI at all.
To go back to the standard layout for a size, press Reset to default.
A domain admin viewing your workspace can see previews and templates, but can't use Suggest: it would spend your AI actions.
