Food labels

Look up a product by barcode or photo, check what the AI found, and print labels with use-by dates on the continuous roll.

Food labels are part of Home and Business, and live in the admin console under Admin → Food Labels.

Add a product by barcode

Press Scan / look up UPC, then do one of these:

  • Scan with a USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner. It types the code and presses Enter for you.
  • Take a photo of the barcode. If the product has no barcode, photograph the whole product.
  • Type the UPC and press Enter.

Laberty checks a UPC database first. It also asks Claude and ChatGPT, separately, to search the web for the product. The review page shows what each one found, for example "UPC database: found" and "Claude: found (high confidence)". Where the AIs disagreed, the field shows a hint so you know to look closely.

Nothing is saved until you check it and press Save to catalog.

Check allergens and nutrition against the package. The lookup is usually right, but a label someone relies on has to be exactly right.

A lookup that searches the web uses more AI actions than a chat message. See AI actions.

Other ways to add products

  • Add custom product, for your own cooking or anything without a barcode. Laberty can make a house barcode for it.
  • Bulk upload, to add many products at once.
  • Photograph the directions. If the cooking directions from the lookup are wrong, take a photo of the box panel and Laberty transcribes the real ones.

Open a product and choose what goes on the label:

  • Description
  • Image
  • Nutrition
  • Cooking instructions
  • Use-by date
  • Barcode

Then set the longest label you want and how many copies, and press Print. With a print bridge connected, the labels go straight to your default printer and the page says Printed ✓. Without one, you get the PDF to print. If the bridge can't take them, the page offers Open the PDF instead. Bulk uploads and grocery batches print the same way.

The label is made at the width of the roll in your default printer. Long content carries on to an extra label instead of shrinking to an unreadable size. Dates are written day, month and year, so they can't be misread.

Grocery mode

Food Labels → Grocery mode is for shopping. Scan items as you go, with the camera, a barcode scanner or by typing. Later, from home:

  • Review the trip and look up anything new.
  • Set use-by dates. You can say them: "the milk's good for two weeks, the chicken until Tuesday".
  • Print the labels.

To scan in the store without signing in, use your personal link: Set up grocery mode on your phone.
