Setting up your first printer and labels

Answer five short questions about your printer, and Laberty sets it up and prints a test page.

Everything about printers lives on Admin → Printers & stock. Press Add a printer and Laberty asks five short questions. You can go back to any of them, and change every answer later with Edit.

1. What kind of printer?

ChooseFor
Label printer — rollsBrother QL, DYMO LabelWriter, Rollo, Zebra. Sticky labels on a roll
Receipt printerEpson TM and other 80 mm or 58 mm thermal printers. Plain paper, not labels
Regular inkjet or laser — label sheetsAn everyday printer with sheets of Avery labels
Something elseBrother P-touch tape printers, or any printer already set up with a driver on the print bridge computer

2. Which one?

Only printers of that kind are listed, grouped by brand. If yours isn't there, pick one under My model isn't listed, such as Other receipt printer (58mm) or Any inkjet or laser printer.

3. How is it connected?

You only see the ways your printer can really connect:

  • On my network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet). Laberty prints to it through the print bridge. Type the printer's IP address, like 192.168.1.50, and leave the port empty. Laberty uses 9100 for label and receipt printers and 631 for inkjet and laser printers. How do I find the IP address? on that step says where to look.
  • Plugged into the print bridge computer. For USB printers and printers that need their own driver, such as a DYMO LabelWriter or a Brother QL-800. Type the print queue name from that computer.
  • I only print from my phone or iPad. Nothing to fill in. See Printing from an iPhone or iPad.

Printing through the bridge needs Home or Business.

4. What's in it?

Laberty only shows labels that fit your printer. A Brother QL sees Brother DK rolls, a Zebra sees thermal labels, and an inkjet sees Avery sheets.

  • Tick every kind you use in this printer. Many families swap one Brother between address labels and the 2.4 in continuous roll: tick both.
  • Choose the one in it now.
  • Labels you pick that aren't in your account yet are added for you.

A receipt printer asks for the paper width instead: 80 mm, the usual size, or 58 mm. Receipts are laid out to fit it.

Size not listed? Add it under Add your own size at the bottom of the page, then press Edit on the printer to pick it. See Label stock.

5. Name it and test it

Laberty suggests a name, like "Kitchen Brother" or "Front counter receipt". Change it to anything you'll recognise. Tick Make this the default printer if Print buttons should use it. The first printer you add is the default.

Press Save & send a test page. The test is written in the printer's own language: a test receipt for a receipt printer, a ZPL label for a Zebra, an alignment sheet for Avery sheets, and a small "LABERTY BRIDGE TEST" label for a Brother. If the bridge is running, it comes out within a few seconds.

For a printer you only use from a phone or iPad, press Save. Then open End User View on that device and print one label, exactly as the member would.

The Free plan includes 1 printer, Home 2, and Business as many as you need.

Your printer's card

Each printer on Printers & stock has a card that says, in plain words:

  • what it is, and how it connects, with its address
  • whether the print bridge can reach it, or if it still needs an IP address
  • In it now, with a Swap roll button for each other label it uses. Press it whenever you change the roll, so labels print at the right size

Test page, Edit, Make default and Remove are on the card too. Details shows the technical settings, in case support asks for them.
